How to Show your Employees you Care about their Health

Employees are the best asset of every organization. Putting effort into employee wellness can encourage better teamwork, increased productivity, and reduce sick leave and workplace accidents. Individuals will achieve healthier lifestyles when prevention and wellness programs are accessible and available through their workplace. Having healthy employees reduces time taken in leave, creates more motivated and happier employees. Creating a healthy working environment displays to your employees that you care about their wellbeing.

Health has so many categories, including mental, physical, and emotional. Encouraging employees to exercise is a great way to improve employee health. Not all companies have the resources or funds to completely reconstruct a 100% healthy working environment, but here are some ideas.

  • For mental health: Encourage positive communication. Train your managers and staff on mental health strategies. Offer advice on stress reduction techniques to all employees. Dedicate a room in your building that is stress-free or for meditation.
  • For physical health: Enter your employees in fun runs or charity runs. Encourage employees to take the stairs. Buy employees a gym membership or incentive towards one. Fund an employee sports team. Encourage healthier eating and invest in refrigerators for those to bring in their own lunches. Offer free fruit and veggies around your worksite
  • For social/emotional health: Allow your employees to engage and work with one another outside of specific work duties.   Hold open discussion forums for employees to learn and gain feedback from one another. Create positive roles and futures within the company. Focus on team building activities.

When you employees see your effort in creating a healthier worksite, they will know you care about them personally.   Most employees see their co-workers more than their own family.   Having a place away from home where they feel save and valued is crucial if you want an increase in employee retention.   Recognize your employees’ success at work and at home.   Holding regular meetings and check-ins with your employees, builds trust and a culture of acceptance.
